The AI-to-Human Handoff Test

The customer explains the problem to an AI assistant. They provide their name, the reason for calling, the timing, the product, and what they need next. The system says it will connect them with a person.

Then the human answers and asks, "How can I help you?"

The customer has to start over.

What starting over actually says

That is not a small inconvenience. It tells the customer that the first conversation did not matter. It also tells the employee that the AI layer is not carrying useful work forward. The technology answered, but the business did not listen.

A handoff needs more than a transcript

The human needs a usable summary, the customer's intent, the important facts, the unresolved question, the urgency, and any boundaries or commitments already stated. The record must identify what the AI knows, what it does not know, and why the conversation needs a person.

The human also needs room to correct the model. If the summary is wrong, incomplete, or too confident, the employee must be able to amend it before the next action.

The bidirectional part

That is what makes a handoff governed rather than merely automated. The system captures. The human reviews. The customer corrects. The shared picture improves.

The goal is not to make the AI sound human enough to hide the handoff. The goal is to make the handoff useful enough that the customer feels continuity.

Test it before it touches a live line

Before an AI touches a live customer line, test this exact transition on a controlled number. Ask a real question. Escalate it. Inspect what the human receives. Confirm whether that person can continue without restarting discovery.

If the context does not survive the handoff, the system is not ready for production.

Where to start

Run the Revenue Leak Scorecard and examine what happens between the first response and the human handoff. Make the context travel before you ask the customer to trust the automation.
